AWS CodePipeline
CodePipeline
You need to coordinate a repeatable software release across source, build, test and deployment stages.
Reach for it when
- Connecting version-controlled changes to a controlled release workflow.
- Adding review or approval stages when the release process needs them.
Do not reach for it when
- Compiling code directly: delegate that stage to a build provider.
- Assuming pipeline success proves the deployed application is healthy.
Alternatives, and how to choose
| Service | Pick it instead when |
|---|---|
| GitHub Actions | Choose a workflow platform based on repository and execution requirements. |
| CodeBuild | Use it as a build and test executor within or outside a pipeline. |
How you pay
- The model
- Pipeline mode and usage affect pipeline charges; integrated services are billed separately.
- The line item that surprises people
- Build and deployment activity can incur additional charges beyond orchestration.
What trips people up
- Permissions and artifact access must work between stages.
- Use meaningful tests and post-deployment checks; a green orchestration status only describes configured actions.
