AWS Billing and Cost Management
Billing and Cost Management
You need to understand spending, allocate it to projects and receive useful budget notifications.
Reach for it when
- Reviewing trends and filtering costs by service, account or allocation tag.
- Creating budgets and investigating unexpected usage before it grows.
Do not reach for it when
- Blocking all charges instantly: a budget alert is not a universal spending cap.
- Diagnosing application latency: inspect operational metrics.
Alternatives, and how to choose
| Service | Pick it instead when |
|---|---|
| Cost Explorer | Analyze historical spending and forecasts. |
| CloudWatch | Investigate the usage and operational symptoms behind a cost change. |
How you pay
- The model
- Billing tools have differing feature and API charges; check the selected tool.
- The line item that surprises people
- Resource charges continue even if the cost dashboard or notification has not updated.
What trips people up
- Enable and use cost allocation tags deliberately; tagging alone does not produce every desired report.
- Budgets can notify and support configured actions, but delayed usage reporting can allow further charges.
