Proposed flow for this scenario

  1. Workload constraints
  2. Execution and state boundary
  3. Required permissions
  4. Failure and replacement
  5. Useful completion and complete cost

This flow describes a design to evaluate. The local experiment explores one stated mechanism. Its scope appears with the controls; the proposed services are not provisioned.

Traditional LambdaA bounded independent invocation fits the supported runtime and resource constraints.Keeping durable job state only in one execution environment.
EC2A VM-level environment and operating control are necessary.Assuming one always-running VM supplies high availability or a backup.
Managed containers or another modeThe task fits neither selected baseline comfortably.Treating the decision as a forced two-option choice.

Start with one unit of useful work

In this synthetic comparison, a LetX export request can be processed independently while QuantumSketch needs a specific native process environment. Identify continuous execution time, resource needs, dependencies and result ownership. The application name alone cannot determine whether a function or VM fits.

Traditional Lambda has a bounded invocation duration. Current Lambda modes differ, so do not apply that limit universally. EC2 removes that particular function-invocation boundary but introduces operating-system, process, capacity and replacement responsibilities. It does not remove the need to recover unfinished work.

Separate runtime reuse from durable state

A reused function environment may retain convenient temporary state, but the job’s authoritative status should survive replacement. A VM’s memory is equally unsuitable as the only record of an accepted customer operation. Persist the inputs and results required to retry safely.

For EC2, decide how a new instance acquires its application, configuration, role and network path. For Lambda, decide how permissions and function configuration support the selected invocation. Neither platform automatically knows whether a customer notification already succeeded.

Compare faults rather than only healthy requests

Suppose the dependency rejects every request. More Lambda invocations or more EC2 workers can amplify the problem unless concurrency and retries respect downstream capacity. A queue may absorb suitable background work while the dependency recovers.

Use the backlog experiment below to compare hypothetical arrivals and completion. In the console, inspect a named Lambda preset timeout and an EC2 network failure separately. No real function code, VM operating system or performance benchmark runs in these exercises.

Original comparison worksheet

For a tabletop exercise, write the LetX job’s input, authoritative status, result location and maximum acceptable wait. Then remove the worker midway through result publication. Describe the next worker’s evidence before it retries. The safe recovery boundary should remain understandable whether the worker was a function invocation or a VM process.

Add an operations checklist for the VM alternative: deployment, patching, application supervision, usable logs and replacement. For the function alternative, list invocation permissions, resource configuration and failure handling. The comparison becomes concrete when each design has an owner and a recovery procedure rather than an attractive diagram alone.

Make the cost comparison complete

Include execution or instance capacity, idle requirements, traffic, storage, logs, data services and availability in the same workload estimate. A quiet month and a sustained month may produce different choices. Existing commitments and required warm capacity also affect the result.

Question: QuantumSketch now requires an uninterrupted native job that cannot fit traditional Lambda, but does not require VM administration. Is EC2 the only alternative? No. Evaluate a suitable managed task or other execution mode against its actual constraints. The comparison should explain the requirement, not promote a preferred service label.
